What Is a Murphy Bed and How Does It Work? Everything You Need to Know

If you live in a Dubai studio or a one-bedroom apartment, you have probably done the mental geometry at some point. The bed takes up half the room. When it is there, there is no space for anything else. When guests come over, the living area you do have is already compromised.

The Murphy bed — also called a wall bed, fold-down bed, or hideaway bed — is the most practical answer to this problem that furniture design has produced. It is a real bed with a real mattress that folds vertically against the wall when you are not sleeping in it, returning the full floor area to you for whatever else you need the room to do.

The concept is over a hundred years old. The engineering behind it has been refined considerably since then. And in a city where residential floor space costs what it does in Dubai, it has become one of the most frequently requested furniture solutions we are asked about.

This guide explains everything: how the mechanism works, what the different components do, which styles suit which situations, and what you need to know before commissioning one.

A Brief History — Where It Started and Why It Still Makes Sense

William Murphy invented the wall bed in San Francisco at the turn of the twentieth century. The story goes that he lived in a one-room apartment and wanted to entertain guests — specifically a female opera singer he was trying to impress — without the social awkwardness of receiving a woman in what was technically a bedroom. His solution was to hinge the bed so it disappeared into a closet when not in use, turning the sleeping space into a respectable parlour.

He patented the pivot and counterweight mechanism in the early 1900s, and the Murphy Bed Company has been operating ever since. The social context that motivated the original invention no longer exists. The space problem that made it useful absolutely does — and in a city like Dubai, it is considerably more acute than it was in a San Francisco studio apartment a century ago.

"The core idea has not changed in a hundred years because it does not need to. A bed that disappears when you are not using it gives you back the room. The engineering around it has simply made the operation smoother, quieter, and more reliable."

How the Mechanism Actually Works

The question most people ask first is the obvious one: a mattress and frame together weigh a significant amount — how does one person move it with one hand without it becoming dangerous?

The answer is counterbalancing. The lift mechanism — either a spring system or a gas piston system — carries the weight of the bed for you. You are not lifting the bed; you are guiding a movement that the mechanism is already doing. Done correctly, the transition between vertical and horizontal should feel almost weightless. If it feels heavy, the mechanism is not properly calibrated to the mattress weight.

🔩 Spring-Loaded Systems

  • Heavy-gauge coil springs carry the bed weight
  • Tension adjustable for different mattress weights
  • Very durable — decades of reliable operation
  • Individual springs replaceable if one fails
  • Can develop slight creaking over years of use
  • Lower initial cost

⚡ Gas Piston Systems

  • Gas-pressure struts control the movement
  • Smooth, silent, controlled in both directions
  • Will not drop suddenly if you release the handle
  • Minimal maintenance over years of use
  • Better safety where children are present
  • Higher upfront cost, lower long-term effort

For most Dubai apartments where the bed will be used daily and quiet operation matters, we typically recommend gas piston systems. For occasional-use guest room installations where cost is more of a consideration, spring systems perform reliably and last well.

The four components that make a Murphy bed work — cabinet, frame, lift mechanism, and folding legs

The Four Components — What Each One Does

1

The Wall Cabinet

The cabinet is the structural housing for the entire system — the "garage" the bed parks into when not in use. It provides the anchor point for the mechanism and must be fixed securely to the wall, not just resting against it. When the bed is fully extended, it exerts significant leverage against its mounting point. In Dubai apartments, this means proper anchoring into concrete — not just plasterboard or drywall. A freestanding Murphy bed unit is not a safe option regardless of how it is marketed. The cabinet also defines the visual appearance of the piece when closed: it can be designed to look like a wardrobe, a wall panel, or a built-in feature depending on the finish and surrounding joinery.

2

The Bed Frame and Mattress Platform

The frame holds the mattress in place and provides the sleeping surface. Modern Murphy bed frames use either a slatted base or a solid platform — both provide the same level of support as a conventional bed base. Heavy-duty straps secure the mattress to the frame so it stays in position when the unit is in the vertical position. The frame is the component that determines which mattresses the unit can take — most systems accommodate mattresses up to 25–30 cm thick, which covers the full range of quality memory foam and pocket spring options.

3

The Pivot Points and Lift Mechanism

The pivot points are the hinges where the bed frame meets the cabinet — the most mechanically stressed component in the entire system. They allow a precise 90-degree rotation and must be manufactured from high-grade steel to handle the repeated stress of daily use without developing play or noise. The lift mechanism — springs or pistons — attaches at these points and provides the counterbalancing force that makes the movement effortless. Calibration of the mechanism to the exact weight of the mattress is done at installation and can be adjusted if the mattress is changed.

4

The Folding Legs

As the bed lowers to the horizontal position, a set of legs extends to support the foot end of the frame. In basic systems, these are flipped out manually. In better-quality systems, they deploy automatically as the bed reaches horizontal — no separate step, no potential for forgetting. When the bed is closed, the legs fold flush with the frame and disappear entirely inside the cabinet. A bed without properly deployed legs is not safe to sleep in — the frame should never rest unsupported at the foot end regardless of how solid the mechanism feels.

The Different Murphy Bed Styles Available

⬆️

Vertical (Portrait) Murphy Bed

The standard orientation — bed hinges at the head end and stands upright when closed. Requires ceiling height of at least 220 cm for a queen. The most space-efficient option for rooms with normal ceiling heights and enough wall width.

↔️

Horizontal (Landscape) Murphy Bed

Hinges along the side of the mattress — bed opens sideways rather than downward. Ideal for rooms with low ceilings, attic spaces, or narrow rooms where a vertical bed would block too much of the floor when open.

💻

Murphy Desk Bed

A desk is integrated into the front face of the cabinet. When the bed folds down, the desk surface stays horizontal — you can leave your laptop and papers on it. Popular for home offices that double as guest rooms.

🛋️

Murphy Bed with Sofa Combo

A sofa sits in front of the wall cabinet. The bed lowers over the sofa — either the sofa folds flat automatically or the bed frame clears the backrest. The most complete studio apartment solution: proper seating by day, proper bed by night.

Why Murphy Beds Work Particularly Well in Dubai

The value of a Murphy bed is directly proportional to the cost of floor space — and floor space in Dubai is expensive. In Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, JLT, and Business Bay, every square metre of apartment costs a significant premium both to buy and to rent. A studio that functions as both a living room and a bedroom genuinely lives larger than its floor plan suggests.

The guest room argument is particularly compelling. Most Dubai apartments with a designated guest room have that room sitting unused for the majority of the year. With a Murphy bed installed, the same room becomes usable daily — a home office, a gym space, a hobby room — and converts back to a proper bedroom with a real mattress in under a minute when guests arrive.

Modern units also accommodate quality mattresses — memory foam, pocket spring, orthopaedic — up to 30 cm thick. The idea that a wall bed means compromising on sleep quality is outdated. The mattress you sleep on in a Murphy bed can be identical to the one in a conventional bed frame.

Why Professional Installation Is Not Optional

A Murphy bed is not in the same category as a flat-pack wardrobe. When the bed is fully extended, it exerts considerable leverage against the wall mounting. The mechanism contains heavy-gauge springs or pressurised gas pistons. The total weight of the unit — cabinet, frame, mechanism, and mattress — is significant. Getting the installation wrong creates a real safety risk.

Wall anchoring must be into structural elements. In Dubai's reinforced concrete apartment buildings, this means proper masonry anchors drilled into the concrete slab or structural wall — not into plasterboard or finishing layers. A unit anchored only to non-structural material will eventually pull away from the wall.

Mechanism calibration must match the mattress weight. A spring or piston system set for a lighter mattress than the one installed will make the bed feel heavy and difficult to raise. One set for a heavier mattress may cause the bed to spring up unexpectedly when being lowered. Both are problems that a professional calibrates out at installation.

Floor level affects long-term mechanism performance. If the cabinet is not perfectly level, the pivot points operate at a slight angle with every use. Over thousands of cycles, this creates uneven wear on the mechanism. Professional installation includes checking and compensating for floor level before the cabinet is fixed.

Our team at Carpenters Dubai handles Murphy bed installation with structural assessment, correct anchoring for Dubai's building types, precision levelling, and full mechanism calibration before handover.

Maintenance — Keeping It Working Well

A properly installed Murphy bed requires very little maintenance. Check the wall mounting bolts once a year — tighten if any movement is felt. Keep the pivot points clean and dust-free; a small amount of appropriate lubricant on metal-to-metal contact points every couple of years keeps the movement smooth. If the bed starts to feel heavier or lighter than it should, the mechanism tension may need adjustment — this is a straightforward task for a professional and should not be ignored, as a poorly calibrated mechanism puts extra stress on the pivot points.

Avoid folding the bed with the duvet or heavy blankets still spread across it — bunched fabric can catch in the mechanism or create uneven load on the frame. Standard sleeping pillows can usually stay on the bed if the cabinet design accommodates them; decorative pillows are better removed. And treat the mechanism as what it is — a precision piece of engineering designed for sleeping, not for sitting on the end of the frame or using as a platform for anything other than its intended purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any mattress on a Murphy bed?

Most standard mattresses work fine — the key specifications to check are thickness and weight. Most Murphy bed frames have a maximum mattress thickness of around 25 to 30 centimetres, which covers the majority of quality memory foam and pocket spring options. The mattress weight affects how the lift mechanism is calibrated — your installer will ask for this at the time of installation. Within those parameters, the mattress choice is entirely yours. There is no reason to accept a thin or uncomfortable mattress because the bed folds into a wall.

How much effort does it take to raise and lower the bed?

With a correctly calibrated mechanism, the bed should feel close to weightless — operable with two fingers in each direction. If it feels heavy to raise, the tension is set too low for your mattress weight. If it drops faster than expected when lowering, it is set too high. Both are easy adjustments for a professional. If your bed currently feels heavy and it was not installed recently, the mechanism may need recalibration — spring tension can change slightly over years of use and the pistons in older gas systems can lose pressure.

Are Murphy beds safe for households with children?

Modern Murphy beds with gas piston systems are inherently safer around children than spring systems — the pistons prevent the bed from dropping suddenly if someone lets go of the handle. Safety locks can be fitted at the top of the cabinet to prevent the bed being lowered without an adult deliberately unlocking it first. As with any heavy furniture, the transformation should only be operated by an adult. A professionally installed unit with correctly functioning auto-deploy legs and a calibrated mechanism is safe for normal family use.

How much wall space do I need for a Murphy bed in a Dubai apartment?

For a vertical queen-size installation — the most common specification in Dubai one-bedroom apartments — you need approximately 165 to 175 centimetres of unobstructed wall width and a ceiling height of at least 220 centimetres. For a single or double, the width requirement reduces to around 105 to 115 centimetres. The cabinet projects approximately 35 to 45 centimetres from the wall when closed. We measure the specific space before quoting so the dimensions are confirmed rather than estimated.

Do I need to remove pillows every time I close the bed?

It depends on the cabinet design. Many Murphy bed cabinets include a recess in the headboard section specifically to accommodate standard sleeping pillows — so they stay on the bed when it folds up. Large decorative pillows or very thick pillows may need to be removed if they do not fit within that recess. Standard sleeping pillows secured by the mattress straps in most cases stay in place without issue. This is worth confirming at the design stage if it matters to your daily routine.
