ToggleInsect Screen Installation Dubai — Keep the Air In, Keep the Insects Out
Dubai in the warmer months means open windows are something you want but cannot always have. The moment you open a window or a door to let air in, you are also letting in mosquitoes, flies, sand flies, and whatever else happens to be circling outside. Closing everything up and running the AC solves the insect problem but drives up the electricity bill and makes the indoor environment feel sealed and stale.
A properly fitted insect screen gives you the middle option — windows and doors open for ventilation, insects kept out. It sounds simple, and when it is done properly it is. But a screen that is the wrong size, fitted with gaps, or made from mesh that degrades quickly in Dubai's heat and UV becomes a problem rather than a solution within a season.
At Carpenter Dubai, we measure, cut, and fit insect screens for windows, doors, and sliding openings across all types of Dubai properties — apartments, villas, townhouses, and offices. We use materials that are rated for outdoor UV exposure rather than standard mesh that yellows and weakens quickly. Call us on 0581873002 for a free quote.
Why Most Insect Screen Problems Come Down to the Same Things
Gaps around the frame. A screen that does not sit flush against the frame on all four sides is not really a screen — it is a partial barrier with obvious entry points. Mosquitoes do not need much. A gap at one corner is enough for them to get through freely. Getting the fit right requires proper measurement and the right frame type for the specific window or door opening.
Mesh that degrades quickly in Dubai sun. Standard fibreglass mesh, the cheapest option, yellows and becomes brittle in direct sun within twelve to eighteen months in Dubai's UV intensity. Once the mesh degrades it tears easily, and small tears become large ones quickly. The fix is using a UV-stabilised mesh from the start — it costs slightly more but lasts years rather than a single season.
DIY screens that do not stay in place. Adhesive strip screens and push-fit frames from hardware shops are fine as a temporary measure. They rarely stay put through repeated opening and closing of windows, and they tend to look poor from the outside. A properly framed and fitted screen stays in place, opens and closes cleanly, and does not need to be repositioned every few days.
Screen Types We Supply and Install
Different window and door types need different screen solutions. Here is what we work with:
Fixed Window Screens
For windows that you open and close but do not need the screen to move independently, a fixed frame screen is the most durable and airtight option. We measure the opening, fabricate the frame and mesh to the exact dimensions, and fit it so it sits flush and secure. These work particularly well on casement windows and louvred openings where the window itself handles the ventilation and the screen just needs to stay in place.
Sliding Insect Screens
For sliding windows and sliding patio doors, a sliding screen that runs on its own track allows you to open the glass panel independently of the screen. You slide the glass open, the screen stays closed — or you slide both open when the screen is not needed. We fit sliding screen systems for single and double sliding door openings, including the larger openings common in Dubai villa living rooms and balcony doors. The track and roller hardware we use is rated for the weight and frequency of use that a main entrance or living area door gets.
Retractable Roll-Up Screens
For openings where you want the option to remove the screen entirely when not needed — large balcony doors, main entrance doors, or any opening where the screen would obstruct the view when rolled away — a retractable screen retracts into a slim housing at the side of the frame when not in use. These are particularly popular in Dubai apartments where the balcony view is one of the things you paid for and a fixed screen would partially obscure it. The housing is compact and can be colour-matched to the window frame.
Door Screens and Magnetic Closure Screens
For doors that get used frequently — a kitchen door that goes to a garden, a utility room entrance, or a rear access — a screen door with a proper closer mechanism means the screen shuts behind anyone walking through without them having to think about it. We also fit magnetic strip screens for doorways where a full door screen is not practical — the magnets hold the screen closed between passes but allow easy hands-free entry. These work well in busy indoor-outdoor transition areas.
Pleated Fold-Away Screens
A pleated screen folds concertina-style into a slim stack at one side of the opening when not in use. It takes up very little space in the retracted position, which makes it a good option for large openings where a roll-up cassette would be too bulky or where the screen needs to fold to one side rather than rolling up vertically. Pleated screens handle wide double-door openings well and are frequently used in villas with wide garden access doors.
Custom Sizes for Non-Standard Openings
Not all windows and doors in Dubai properties are standard sizes — particularly in older buildings or properties that have had alterations over the years. We fabricate frames to any dimensions required. If you have been told by other suppliers that your window is an awkward size, call us. Non-standard sizes are part of our normal work, not an exception.

Mesh Options — What the Difference Actually Means
The mesh is what does the actual work, and the type matters more than most people realise before they have had to replace a screen after a single season.
Standard Fibreglass Mesh
The most common and least expensive option. It filters insects effectively and allows good airflow. In a shaded position — an interior courtyard, a north-facing window, anywhere that does not get prolonged direct sun — standard fibreglass mesh lasts well. In direct sun, it yellows and becomes brittle faster than UV-stabilised alternatives. For Dubai windows that get full afternoon sun, it is not our first recommendation.
UV-Stabilised Fibreglass Mesh
The same fibreglass weave but treated to resist UV degradation. Stays flexible and maintains its colour significantly longer in direct sun than standard mesh. This is what we use as our default for Dubai installations where the screen will be in a sun-exposed position. The cost difference over standard mesh is minor and the lifespan difference in Dubai conditions is significant.
Aluminium Mesh
More durable than fibreglass and better at resisting physical damage — a pet pushing against it, objects pressing on it from outside, or repeated contact over time. Aluminium mesh does not tear or puncture as easily as fibreglass. It is heavier, which affects how it sits in the frame, and it reflects slightly more light than fibreglass. For ground-floor installations or any position where the screen is likely to get physical contact, aluminium mesh is the more practical choice.
Fine Mesh for Sand Flies and Small Insects
Standard insect mesh has openings of approximately 1.2mm — enough to exclude mosquitoes and flies but not necessarily the very fine sand flies (also called no-see-ums) that are common in Dubai's coastal areas during certain seasons. Fine mesh with smaller openings blocks these smaller insects but reduces airflow slightly. If sand flies are a specific problem at your property, we can fit fine mesh in the relevant openings.
Solar and Privacy Mesh
A heavier mesh that reduces the amount of direct solar radiation passing through the window opening while also providing a degree of one-way privacy from the outside. This option is more commonly used in offices and commercial properties but is also relevant for Dubai apartments and villas where a west-facing window gets intense afternoon sun. The screen does double duty — insects out, sun and heat partially blocked.

Why Professional Installation Makes a Difference
A well-fitted insect screen is one you stop thinking about. It opens and closes cleanly, sits flush in the frame, does not rattle in the wind, and does not need to be repositioned. A poorly fitted one is a constant minor irritation — gaps you notice at dusk when the insects start coming in, a frame that pops out when the window is opened, mesh that sags in the middle because the frame tension is wrong.
The difference comes from measurement and frame fabrication. Off-the-shelf screens are made to standard sizes that rarely match actual window dimensions in Dubai's mix of older and newer buildings. Our frames are fabricated to your window's exact measurements — not adjusted from a standard size, but cut to fit. The mesh is tensioned properly across the frame so it sits flat. The fixing method matches the window type so the screen stays in place through repeated use.
"The test of a good insect screen is that after a week you have completely forgotten it is there — the window works normally, insects are out, and nothing needs adjusting."
Insect Screen Maintenance — Keeping Them in Good Condition
Insect screens are not high-maintenance, but a small amount of attention extends their life significantly in Dubai conditions.
Cleaning
Dust and fine sand builds up on screen mesh, particularly during shamal wind periods. A light wipe with a damp cloth or a gentle rinse with water every few months keeps the mesh clear and maintains airflow. Do not use abrasive cleaners or stiff brushes — they damage the mesh coating over time. For frames, a slightly damp cloth to remove dust from the frame channel and runners is enough.
Checking for Damage
Small tears in the mesh tend to expand quickly, particularly fibreglass mesh. Check your screens periodically — especially after periods of strong wind — for small holes or loose corners. A minor tear caught early is a simple repair. Left until it has expanded, the whole mesh panel usually needs replacing. We offer re-meshing of existing frames where the frame itself is still sound — it is considerably cheaper than a full replacement screen.
Sliding Screen Track Maintenance
Sliding screens run in a bottom track that collects dust and debris in Dubai's environment. If a sliding screen starts to feel stiff or jumpy, the track is usually the cause. Clean the track channel with a small brush and vacuum out the accumulated dust. A very light application of silicone spray (not oil-based lubricant, which attracts more dust) to the rollers keeps them running smoothly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which type of insect screen is right for my window or door?
The main factors are how the window or door opens, what you want to do with the screen when it is not in use, and what the opening is used for. For a window that stays open for ventilation, a fixed frame screen is usually the simplest and most durable option. For a balcony door where you want to use the full opening freely, a sliding or retractable screen gives you more flexibility. For a wide villa entrance, a pleated screen folds away more neatly than a sliding one. When we visit, we can walk through the options for each opening and give you a recommendation based on what will actually work best rather than what is easiest to install.
Can you replace just the mesh in an existing screen frame?
Yes, if the frame itself is still structurally sound — not bent, not corroded through, and still the right size for the opening. Re-meshing is significantly cheaper than a full replacement screen and is the right call when the frame is fine but the mesh has torn or degraded. We check the frame condition when we visit and give you an honest view on whether re-meshing or full replacement is the better value for your specific screens.
How long do insect screens last in Dubai's climate?
It depends on the mesh type and the sun exposure. UV-stabilised fibreglass mesh in a partially shaded position will typically last five to eight years before it starts to degrade noticeably. In direct full sun, expect three to five years. Aluminium mesh lasts longer than fibreglass in both direct and indirect sun but is slightly heavier and less flexible. Standard non-UV fibreglass in direct Dubai sun can start yellowing and becoming brittle within a season or two — which is why we do not use it as our default for this climate.
Do insect screens reduce airflow significantly?
Standard insect mesh reduces airflow by around 20 to 30 percent compared to an open window — noticeable but not dramatic. Fine mesh for sand flies reduces airflow more — around 40 to 50 percent — because the openings are smaller. Solar or privacy mesh reduces airflow and light more significantly. For most Dubai apartments where the primary purpose is ventilation with insect exclusion, standard UV-stabilised mesh is the right balance.
Do insect screens affect the appearance of the windows from inside or outside?
A well-fitted screen with a clean frame in a colour that matches or complements the window frame is barely noticeable from inside. From outside, the visual impact depends on the screen type — fixed frames are visible as a frame around the window, retractable screens disappear entirely when rolled away, and sliding screens are visible in their track position. We can discuss frame colour options — white, brown, black, silver, and custom colours are typically available — to match your existing window and door frames.
Do you offer same-day insect screen installation in Dubai?
For smaller jobs — replacing a single screen or fitting two or three standard-size window screens — same-day booking is often possible depending on the team's schedule that day. For larger jobs involving multiple screens across an apartment or villa, next-day or scheduled bookings allow us to come prepared with the right materials cut to your measurements. The fastest way to check availability is to call us on 0581873002 or send a WhatsApp message with a quick description and your location.
Can you install insect screens in rented apartments in Dubai?
Yes — insect screens are generally considered a practical accessory rather than a structural modification, and most landlords are fine with tenants fitting them. If you are unsure, the easiest approach is to choose a screen type that does not require drilling into the window frame — adhesive magnetic systems or tension-fit frames work in these situations. When we visit we can advise on the best no-drill options for your specific window types if that is a concern.
